Orfanidis Sotiris

Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1980-1990). For his Ph.D. studies he granted from the German Academic Exchange Service (D.A.A.D) to visit the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland, Germany (1986-1989). Within the framework of Human Capital and Mobility European Program he did Post Doc studies in the Marine Biology Department of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands (1995-1996). His main areas of expertise are ecology and ecophysiology of seaweeds. Recent research interests include studies in community ecology, mapping and usage of benthic macrophytes as bioindicators of water quality. Of particular interest is the development of new friendly to the environment technologies in the sectors of integrated aquaculture and antifouling.

Scholarships & Awards

  • May 1986-October 1989. Scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for scientific investigations at "Biologische Anstalt Helgoland", Hamburg, Germany.
  • January 1995-April 1996. Human Capital and Mobility, Individual Fellowships (European Community) for scientific investigations at Department of Marine Biology, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
  • June-1997: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Directorate for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Two weeks fellowship to study in the University of Rennes I, France the agricultural uses of marine plants grown in eutrophicated waters.
